The popularity of the World Wide Web continues to grow due to the abundance of information, services, commerce, and recreation that people enjoy from Internet based resources. However, in order to have access to much of the most useful information and services - while keeping an acceptable level of security - users must remember more and more usernames and passwords. The growing number of username and password pairs continues to increase and will soon be a nightmare to users.
The use of passwords as a means of authentication is not strong enough for services that require added security, like e-commerce, online banking, government portal, corporate Intranet access, IP telephony, etc. Moreover, in certain applications such as fixed-mobile convergence, WLAN access, and Broadband Wireless access, simple password authentication may be undesirable, impractical, or may not apply. Stronger authentications are required but, unfortunately, they are usually both costly and not particularly user-friendly.
StrongSIM.org, the new "Strong SIM Authentication Task Force", is comprised of a group of leading technology firms that have formed a partnership for the purpose of promoting the use of SIM card technology in order to provide simple, cost effective, and user friendly strong authentication for secure Internet services and transactions.
Participating organizations include Axalto, Linus, Lucent Technologies, Oslo University College, Telenor, Ubisafe and Ulticom.
